Research

Research Interests.

My research activities reflect my interdisciplinary background, starting with my dual training in literature and linguistics and philology. As a result, my research work focuses on three themes that may seem far apart, but are grouped around the same approach. I am particularly interested in the study of the relationship between artistic production, social movements, and politics. The analysis of texts from armed conflicts such as the First and Second World Wars, as well as ideological and cultural conflicts, therefore lies at the heart of my work. My three main areas of research are:

- History, conflict, and politics
- Literature and multilingualism
- Digital methodology

My approach combines cultural studies and the use of digital technology, particularly Natural Language Processing techniques geared towards discourse analysis. My expertise is applied after the corpus has been created, between the digital analysis of the text and the representation of the data. My first area of specialization in computer science is data visualization: I am a specialist in digital mapping and GIS (Geographic Information Systems), network analysis, and have skills in Python and JavaScript programming, but my environment of choice is R.

The aim of the FRONT_JUSTICE project is to catalogue and digitally analyse the records of trials of French soldiers and civilians that took place at the front during the First World War. Using an approach typical of distant reading, the data contained in the trial minutes will be analysed in order to develop theories about the behaviour of soldiers and civilians at the front. Once collected and structured, these data and their visualisations will make it possible to reinterpret the condition experienced by soldiers through a socio-anthropological reading of the human person on the front line at a time when power is judging, and often condemning, them.

The aim of AVALANCHE is to create a platform composed by the applicant organisations, their partners and their extended networks, which will build and manage correlated activities to raise enhanced awareness of World War II as a funding stone for European historical memory and to promote remembrance as an instrument to nurture Europe’s cultural heritage. The project will focus on women's testimony and language analysis on historical events that are generally unknown and have not been previously a focus of research, on their impact on communities and territories, in order to create a link between global and local histories, focusing on the Liberation War (the liberation of Europe from nazi-fascist oppression), the Rome Holocaust and the application of the Nazis’ “final solution” in Italy and Greece.

The aim of this project is to offer a philological study and digital edition of the Ur Partigiano Johnny manuscripts, which has a fundamental historical value: it is the only written testimony of the military activities at Vesime airport that the Allies managed to set up across the Nazi-controlled front line. This manuscript was published posthumously by Einaudi in 1978, but this edition does not take into account all the newly discovered documents.

Last Letters entails a linguistic and thematic analysis of the final letters authored by Italians condemned to death during the two World Wars. The digitisation of these epistolary texts will serve as a platform to investigate the shaping of post-War European identities and politics, specifically focusing on: the evolving perceptions of gender roles (taking into account, for example, the enfranchisement of women in Italy at the close of the Second World War); attitudes towards conflict; and the delineation of Italian identity through language.

Prismatic Jane Eyre, a collaborative project by multiple scholars, explores the vast array of translations of Charlotte Brontë's seminal work, Jane Eyre, first published in 1847. The project challenges the notion that these translations are mere replicas of the original text, instead advocating for their interpretation as conduits for diverse readings of the novel, akin to a prism refracting light. Through meticulous analysis of both the English original and its myriad translations, Prismatic Jane Eyre reveals how the novel's themes—feminism, politics, and romance—are interpreted differently across cultures, languages, and individual translators. By tracing the novel's reception globally, the project sheds light on why and where it has been translated, and even explores instances where it has not been translated, such as in Swahili. Utilizing digital tools like maps and cover image displays, the project offers new insights into the global dissemination of Brontë's work. Prismatic Jane Eyre thus emerges as a groundbreaking intervention in translation studies, comparative literature, and the study of English literature, appealing to scholars and enthusiasts alike.

Teaching

I am an Associate Professor at UVSQ-Paris Saclay, where I teach digital humanities, social and cultural history, historical archiving, and new communication technologies. My teaching combines a historical and digital approach, covering courses such as research techniques in history, archives of the 19th-21st centuries, and digital humanities for history. I also teach data visualization, textometry, and archival information management, applied to historical research. My expertise includes courses on XML-TEI, distant reading, and network analysis, designed for university students, PhD candidates, and researchers. I am responsible for the undergraduate history program and coordinate the integration of digital technologies into history and humanities education. My goal is to provide students with both traditional historical methodologies and computational tools to enhance their research in the digital age.

Organised Events

I have been engaged in various forms of training and pedagogy for numerous years. Notably, in 2018, I established a pedagogy collective focusing on digital methodologies for the humanities, known as ABC-DH. Through this initiative, I have honed an approach to instructing humanists in the utilization of digital tools. In terms of my philosophy and research ethics, the dissemination of digital culture to young researchers is undeniably one of the paramount aspects I consider crucial and have dedicated significant efforts towards.

Digital Skills

My digital specialties are related to my expertise as a humanist. My interdisciplinary approach is reflected in my computer training because my digital learning was based on my needs as a researcher and teacher. All these skills were acquired in the framework of specific training courses and therefore certified by training institutions. I work equally on Windows as on unix systems such as macOs or Linux.

Innovative Ideas

Natural Language Processing

My linguistic-literary approach led me to turn to the tools that are typical of Natural Language Processing (NLP): Discourse analysis, Stylometry, Sentiment Analiys and Topic Modelling.

Innovative Ideas

Data Visualization

My inclination for historical research and socio-political topics has led me to deepen my knowledge of spatial and chronological analysis through the acquisition of skills in data visualization, particularly Mapping, Network analys.

Innovative Ideas

Graphic Design and Audiovisual Editing

Moreover, after obtaining a specific degree related to the publishing sector, I gradually honed my skills in graphic design and audiovisual editing. The aim was to learn how to use the tools that I would need for my teaching activities, but also for the dissemination of my research activities and results.

Audio Editing

I think audio editing is necessary for anyone involved in teaching. The dissemination of audio material in the form of podcasts is an example of what can be used to reinforce teaching in a department. The tool I prefer using is Logic Pro because it integrates perfectly with my main machine which is a Mac, but for teaching I have always used Audacity which is an open-source multi-platform and which gives excellent results.

Video Editing

Video is one of the most powerful tools that can be used in multimedia communication and I have already worked several times on video editing for research projects such as Prismatic Jane Eyre, a project whose digital content I am responsible for, or Last Letters, my Marie Curie project. After trying a few options of open-source software and Adobe Premier, I also chose a product available in a Mac version called Final Cut, which I think is the best program for video editing. Of course, there are also many possibilities in the open-source world and if I had to choose one, my choice would be Lightworks.
